The (Tentative) Plan
On May 1st, 2005 I (along with my gear) will board a plane in DFW. With any luck I will arrive in Amsterdam on the morning of May 2nd.
I will stay in Amsterdam with my friend Anke for a few days, while I get my head together and reassemble my bike. Any last minute provisions can be purchased here before setting out.
On or around the 5th of May I will bike south to The Hague. This will be the first leg of a long, long journey. In The Hague I hope to stay with my friend Elvy. I will take one or two days to readjust my bike and gear, and allow my body to recover from the first leg of the trip.
From here I will set out for Rotterdam, to pick up the Rhine River bicycle trail. This trail (which follows the Rhine River all the way to its source) will carry me east into western Germany and then turn south for the duration. I will likely follow this path down to Freiburg, where I will turn east through the Black Forrest to Donaueschingen.
In Donaueschingen (at the mouth of the Danube) I will pick up the Danube River bicycle trail and follow it East through southern Germany - through Northern Austria - to Vienna. From here Budapest is just a hop, skip and a jump away further to the East.
Approximately 2 to 3 weeks (and nearly 1500 miles) after departing Amsterdam, I will arrive in Budapest Hungary. Here I intend to stay with Kinga for a week or two and organize the second half of my trip. I will need to arrive in Palermo Italy (Sicily) by June 29th as that is when my plane departs for my return trip to the states.
Along the journey I intend to use public libraries and internet cafes to keep an updated online journal - or web log (blog for short). This blog will be posted on the main page of this website, so if this journey interests you, keep an eye on the site at the beginning of May for updates.
